Waste Not, Want Not: Sustainable Use of Anti-Stripping-Treated Waste Ceramic in Superpave Asphalt Mixtures

This research studied the sustainable utilization of waste ceramic in asphalt mixtures by substituting fine aggregate with treated and untreated produced from construction demolition activities. To improve its adhesion to binder lower moisture susceptibility Superpave mixes, was a silane anti-stripping agent. The Marshall quotient (MQ), stability (MS), indirect tensile strength (ITS), retained (RMS), ratio (TSR) were used assess mechanical performance all mixes. changes chemical composition, synergy, physical state, microstructure composites also investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) scanning electron microscopy (SEM). results revealed that 50% silane-treated ceramics reduced permanent deformation 46%. Moreover, integrating mixture susceptibility, an RMS value 87.7% obtained for containing 75% particles. application agent resulted high between particles bitumen as well production fewer air voids mixes due formation strong CH aromatic linkages, Si-O Si-O-Si bonds. possibility employing alternative virgin aggregates while decreasing environmental impacts improving resource efficiency is highlighted this paper.
